On December 16, GF completes its 100% acquisition of Austrian manufacturer Traisen, cementing decades of collaboration in pipe fittings production.

GF acquires full stake in the Traisen foundry

On 16 December, GF completed its 100% acquisition of the Austrian plant in Traisen, cementing decades of collaboration in pipe fittings production.

This move combines history with growth prospects, culminating in a decades-long partnership with voestalpine, a renowned Austrian steel and technology group that has been a key collaborator in Traisen’s operations. The acquisition reinforces GF’s commitment to preserving its heritage while driving strategic growth for the future.

Forged in steel and tradition

The Traisen site has been central to GF’s identity for over a century. Acquired by Georg Fischer I in 1833, it became a malleable cast iron foundry under his brother Berthold in 1843 and was renamed Berthold Fischer – Eisenguss und Stahlwarenfabrik. Initially focused on steel products, the site gradually expanded into pipe fittings, growing from 90 pieces produced in 1864 to over 8'600 by 1925.

The following years were marked by several changes in ownership. Ultimately, voestalpine took over the production site in 1973, before GF acquired 51% of Fittings Traisen GmbH in 1990. In partnership with voestalpine, the company was later renamed Georg Fischer Fittings GmbH (GFF). This was the start of a strong manufacturing operation focused on malleable iron fittings – one of GF’s oldest and most iconic products. Over the years, the site has produced generations of malleable iron fittings, combining craftsmanship with modern technology.

Malleable iron fitting

As the cornerstone of GF’s product portfolio, malleable iron fittings are known for their durability and reliability in demanding applications. With a threaded design that guarantees secure, leak-proof connections, they are indispensable in industrial and residential piping systems, delivering long-lasting performance and meeting high safety standards.

Widely utilized in construction, shipbuilding, and chemical processing, these fittings are especially crucial in water distribution and industrial gas systems. Their strength and corrosion resistance ensure dependable performance, even in challenging conditions. Customers worldwide continue to associate GF with this iconic product, making it an integral part of the company’s identity.
