In 2022, GF announced that the Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi) has validated the company’s science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions along the value chain. As part of these efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change, GF is increasing the number of carbon-neutral sites (in Scope 1 + 2) around the world – with the latest three ones announced this week.
Today, GF has a total of eight production companies that are carbon neutral within their own operations (Scope 1 and 2), across all four divisions and in various regions of the world. The latest three production companies that have achieved carbon neutral status – in the US, Germany and Switzerland – have been announced this week by GF Piping Systems and GF Building Flow Solutions.
Reducing emissions
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in GF’s own operations include Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, which include direct ones, such as emissions resulting from the processing of materials, and indirect ones, such as emissions stemming from the generation of purchased energy (Source: Homepage | GHG Protocol). In addition to the reduction, the remaining emissions must be offset through the purchase of carbon credits or through other carbon removal mechanisms. To claim carbon neutrality status in its own operations, a site needs to achieve a 90% reduction in CO2e emissions for Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to the baseline emissions of 2019, or a reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions to a level below 40 tonnes of CO2e. Key measures to reduce GHG emissions include the switch to renewable electricity, more efficient machinery and waste heat recovery measures.
Driving change as a sustainability leader
Climate change and the energy transition are some of the most pressing sustainability issues of our time. With products and solutions that address these challenges, GF recognizes its critical role in driving change while also pursuing sustainability within its own operations. Over the past years, GF has made significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across all divisions and sites worldwide, in line with its Sustainability Framework 2025.
